Ongoing efforts by the Pakistani authorities to erect fencing around parts of Gwadar city have sparked protests among local residents, leading to a temporary suspension of the work. The Pakistan Army claims the fencing initiative is a security measure, but in reality, it as an attempt to control citizens’ movement and exploit local resources, causing hardship for those reliant on them.
Gwadar, a coastal city crucial to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is where the Army plans to introduce special entry cards or passes for residents. Previous initiatives under similar pretenses have resulted in checkpoints saturating Gwadar’s alleys, granting Pakistani establishments, including the Coast Guard, intrusive access to homes and forced evictions.
These actions have faced resistance from segments of the local populace, who see them as infringements on their rights and freedom of movement within the city. Footage from the area shows authorities erecting fencing around neighborhoods before public outcry and resident protests forced a pause in the work.
Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) has expressed deep concern over the fencing of Gwadar, labeling it a colonial project aimed at displacing indigenous populations from their ancestral lands. The spokesperson further said that soon protests and a resistance movement against the fencing of Gwadar will be announced.

Gwadar’s significance lies in its role as a vital link in the multi-billion dollar CPEC infrastructure project, designed to connect China to the Arabian Sea and the Strait of Hormuz through Pakistan. Despite promises of significant infrastructure development by the Chinese, the Baloch community has yet to see substantial improvements in basic necessities like clean water and electricity.
Recent flooding, exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure, left residents submerged in 5 to 6 feet of water, with little to no assistance from district and provincial authorities. Despite being in dire need, the Pakistan Army failed to provide even the most basic necessities to the community.
These projects have primarily benefited the Army, bringing investment and economic opportunities while leaving the local population to bear the brunt of their negative consequences.
