Sammi Deen Baloch, the daughter of Dr. Deen Muhammad Baloch, who went missing 15 years ago, held a press conference at the Karachi Press Club along with her sister Mehlab and human rights activists to mark the anniversary of her father’s disappearance. Dr. Deen Muhammad Baloch, a medical doctor and political activist, was picked up by intelligence agencies in 2009 and has been missing since.
Sammi Deen Baloch addressed the media, demanding to know if her father is alive or dead, and if she and her sister are orphans. She lamented that despite numerous attempts to seek justice, including approaching the courts, missing persons’ commission, and protesting on the streets, her pleas have been met with violence and harassment.
The family has been subjected to bullying and intimidation by the state institutions, which have labelled their advocacy as “anti-state”. Sammi Deen Baloch expressed frustration that her father’s prolonged disappearance has had a severe impact on her family, with her father’s siblings passing away without ever knowing what happened to him.
The Baloch Doctors’ Forum Balochistan echoed similar sentiments, calling for the safe recovery of Dr. Deen Muhammad Baloch and condemning his detention as a grave human rights violation. The group described him as a pro-poor individual who dedicated his life to serving humanity.
Sammi Deen Baloch appealed to journalists and others to join her campaign for justice and urged international human rights groups to hold the Pakistani state accountable for her father’s disappearance. She reiterated that she wants only one answer: whether her father is alive or dead.
