Sammul Baloch, a representative of the Baloch National Movement, addressed the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, drawing attention to the severe human rights violations occurring against the Baloch people by Pakistan. In her impactful speech, she detailed the oppression faced by the Baloch and called for significant international awareness and immediate action regarding the deteriorating situation in Balochistan.
During her address, Baloch highlighted the alarming issue of enforced disappearances, stating that thousands of Baloch citizens have been abducted by Pakistani forces, with their fates still unknown.
She referenced statistics from the Baloch human rights organization, Paank, noting that from January to June 2024, 269 individuals—including men, women, and children—were abducted. Additionally, 25 individuals faced extrajudicial killings, and 160 suffered torture.
She characterized these actions as part of a systematic campaign by the Pakistani state to crush the Baloch nation’s struggle for self-determination. The tactics employed, including military force, targeted killings, and intimidation, are indicative of a broader effort to silence the voices of the Baloch people.
Sammul Baloch emphasized that the state’s repressive actions extend beyond political activists to encompass ordinary civilians, cultivating an environment of fear and oppression in Balochistan.
Despite the wealth of evidence concerning these violations, she expressed dismay at the lack of a robust international response, criticizing global institutions for their inaction regarding the Baloch crisis.
She asserted that the human rights violations committed in Balochistan amount to genocide and have been largely overlooked by the international community. The world’s apathy, she argued, represents a profound injustice to the Baloch people.
In her concluding remarks, Sammul Baloch urged the United Nations and the global community to hold Pakistan accountable for its actions in Balochistan. She called for the UN General Assembly to adopt a resolution condemning the systematic oppression of the Baloch nation and advocating for the establishment of a free and independent Baloch state. Such steps, she insisted, are crucial for addressing the ongoing atrocities and affirming the Baloch people’s right to self-determination.
Sammul Baloch’s address illuminated the grave human rights situation in Balochistan, emphasizing the necessity for immediate intervention to safeguard the Baloch people from relentless violence and oppression. She underscored that the Baloch struggle transcends regional concerns and poses significant implications for global human rights and justice.
