A convoy carrying a high-level delegation of Chinese investors and engineers was targeted in a suicide bombing near Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport on Sunday night, as confirmed by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA).
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Lanjar reported to Aaj News that the explosion took place near a vehicle transporting foreign nationals. The BLA’s Majeed Brigade claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that they utilized a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) as the convoy was departing the airport.
According to the BLA, the explosion caused multiple casualties among Chinese personnel and security forces. Spokesperson Jeeyand Baloch mentioned that further information would be released to the media soon.
Initial reports reveal that a car bomb detonated near a traffic signal close to the airport, a common route for VIP convoys. The explosion ignited a significant fire, engulfing several vehicles, including those belonging to security personnel.
Sources at the airport indicated that over 40 Chinese nationals had arrived on two different flights—Thai Air and China Air—only an hour prior to the explosion. The blast was reportedly heard across various areas of the city, including DHA, North Nazimabad, and II Chundrigar Road. Witnesses reported feeling shockwaves from the explosion several kilometers away in Defence and Gulshan-e-Hadeed, with a thick plume of smoke seen rising into the sky.
By 11:38 p.m., fire brigade units arrived at the scene, approximately 25 minutes after the incident occurred. Due to the nature of the fire, which was fueled by oil, firefighters utilized foam to combat the blaze.
Latest updates reveal that rangers and police have cordoned off the area, with an emergency declared at the airport. Individuals within the airport have been instructed to stay there “until further notice,” while incoming flights have been held as well.
