Land plays a crucial role in growth and sustainability. It serves not only as a living space, but also as a key contributor to economic prosperity, cultural identity, and political power. The availability of land determines a nation’s potential for agriculture, industrialization, and urbanization, all of which are critical to its economy. Resources such as minerals, water, and timber found on land can greatly contribute to a country’s wealth and infrastructure. Additionally, land is closely tied to a nation’s cultural heritage and traditions. It holds strategic importance in terms of national defence and sovereignty, as controlling certain territories can provide security and influence in international relations. Therefore, land is not just a physical entity but an essential aspect of a country’s existence and progress. Neglecting proper management and preservation of land resources can hinder development and lead to environmental degradation and resource depletion. Thus, nations must prioritize the importance of land in their policies and strategies.

Occupied Balochistan, located in Pakistan’s southwest. For starters, it is accounting around 44% of Pakistan’s land area. This huge area is abundant in natural resources such as oil, gas, and minerals. The Baloch land is significant for a variety of historical and contemporary reasons. Its strategic location, bordering Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, makes it an important commercial and transportation corridor in the region. Balochistan’s cultural heritage dates back thousands of years.

The Baloch people have a profound connection to this area, their customs and traditions are inextricably linked. Furthermore, Balochistan’s strategic location near the Arabian Sea/ Baloch Sea, as well as its border with Iran and Afghanistan, contribute to its prominence. It has historically served as a battleground for numerous political objectives due to its strategic location. The continuous struggle for independence in Balochistan emphasises the importance of this territory to its people. As a result, any development or policies affecting Balochistan must consider not only its wealth but also the rights of its people to self-determination and freedom. This ensures that both the land and its inhabitants can grow and prosper.

In today’s world where resources are scarce and power dynamics are constantly changing, the Baloch land is crucial for the stability and development of the entire region. This land deserves recognition and attention for its rich history, diverse culture, and ongoing struggle for self-determination.

Pakistan has a lengthy past of taking advantage of Balochistan, and its resources. The central government has consistently disregarded the needs and requests of the Baloch people, leading to widespread poverty, unemployment, and lack of development in the region. The Baloch population has been deprived of their fundamental rights and faced discrimination in all areas of life, including education, healthcare, and employment prospects. The government’s policies have also resulted in environmental destruction and displacement of local communities. While the ruling elite in Pakistan have profited from exploiting natural resources such as gas, oil, and minerals, the Baloch people have received little to no benefit. Military actions and violations of human rights by the Pakistani army have only exacerbated the situation. The continuous exploitation of Baloch land and resources by Pakistan has not only caused immense suffering for its people but has also hindered their economic and social advancement. The international community must address the issues and grievances raised by the Baloch nation.

Throughout history, native populations have been subjected to exploitation and displacement by colonizers and corporations who seek to capitalize on their resources. To address these injustices, global regulations have been put in place to safeguard the rights of indigenous peoples on their territory.

One such regulation is the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which was adopted in 2007. This declaration acknowledges that indigenous peoples have inherent rights to their lands, territories, and resources. Moreover, it prohibits any forced removal or relocation without the prior, free, and informed consent of the indigenous communities. Additionally, according to the International Labor Organization’s Convention No. 169, governments must consult with native communities before approving any development projects that may impact their land or resources. These international laws are vital in protecting indigenous peoples from exploitation and guaranteeing that their sovereignty and rights are respected and upheld. Despite these efforts, many native communities still face threats to their land and resources, underscoring the ongoing necessity for robust international laws and enforcement mechanisms to safeguard their rights.

An important instance of indigenous people presenting a case at the United Nations in defence of their land rights against colonizers is the situation of the Maasai community in Kenya and Tanzania. The Maasai have inhabited the area for many years, but when British colonists arrived in the late 19th century, they imposed their own land ownership systems and forcibly displaced the Maasai from their ancestral lands. In the 1990s, the Maasai launched a campaign to reclaim their land rights and preserve their traditional way of life. They brought their case to the United Nations and successfully obtained a ruling in their favour, which acknowledged their land rights and called for compensation from the government for past wrongdoings. This significant decision not only safeguarded the Maasai’s land rights but also established a precedent for other indigenous communities around the globe to fight against colonizers for their own land rights. This case demonstrates how international organizations like the United Nations can advocate for marginalized communities and hold governments accountable for historical injustices.

The Baloch people have a strong sense of identity, and they have long advocated for their rights and freedom. The region also has substantial natural resources like oil, gas, and minerals, which make it an important economic asset. However, political unrest and violence have afflicted the region, resulting in human rights violations and the displacement of its residents. As a result, the Baloch people’s struggle for independence is not only a matter of pride but also of survival.
