Baloch rights activist Dr. Mahrang Baloch has been recognized in TIME Magazine’s 2024 list of the top 100 emerging leaders for her advocacy on behalf of the people of Balochistan. The TIME100 Next list, released on Wednesday, honors individuals worldwide who are making significant strides across various domains. Dr. Baloch was specifically acknowledged for her commitment to raising awareness about enforced disappearances and human rights abuses in Balochistan.
In response to the announcement, Dr. Baloch expressed her gratitude and solidarity with fellow human rights advocates. She shared on X (formerly Twitter), “I am deeply honored and delighted to be named among the top 100 emerging leaders of the world by @TIME. I dedicate this recognition to all Baloch women human rights defenders and families of victims of forcefully disappeared people.”
Each honoree on the TIME100 Next list is paired with a guest contributor selected by TIME who writes about them. Koh Ewe, a reporter from Singapore, profiled Dr. Baloch and discussed the numerous challenges she encounters in her activism. Ewe noted, “Despite the hope she embodies, Mahrang Baloch is uncertain whether she will live to see a day when her community is free from turmoil.” At 31, Dr. Baloch has endured harassment, arrests, and assassination attempts and reflected, “Our life is not certain in Pakistan.”
Ewe also provided insight into the broader situation in Balochistan, highlighting how a government crackdown on insurgency has resulted in widespread forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings—reportedly including the case of Dr. Baloch’s father, an activist whose body was found in 2011. With many Baloch men either missing or deceased, women like Dr. Baloch are stepping into leadership roles in the fight for Baloch rights. In December 2023, she led a significant march of women to Islamabad, demanding justice for their missing relatives, an event that drew unprecedented attention to the Baloch struggle.
Determined to continue her efforts, Dr. Baloch acknowledged the threats she faces, saying, “There is a lot of threat. There is a lot of oppression. Still we will struggle for humanity.”
The TIME100 Next list showcases emerging leaders and innovators making an impact on a global scale. Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs emphasized that the list honors rising leaders who are reshaping traditional power dynamics. “We aim with this annual franchise to recognize rising leaders and introduce you to those who will play a key role in shaping the future,” Jacobs stated.
The 2024 list features a diverse array of leaders, with more than half of the honorees being women. The youngest member is 18-year-old Summer McIntosh, highlighting a range of political figures, artists, athletes, and climate advocates included in the mix.
To celebrate the accomplishments of those recognized, TIME will host its fourth annual TIME100 Next event on October 9 in New York City, featuring a special performance by Sabrina Carpenter and remarks from various honorees.
