Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, has issued a grave warning about the escalating instability in Pakistan, attributing it to a rise in attacks by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and various Baloch nationalist groups.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Khalilzad questioned, “Is Pakistan heading towards increased instability?” He pointed out that “internal violence is increasing due to attacks by TTP and Baloch nationalists,” and expressed alarm over security forces targeting political opponents. Notably, he mentioned reports of security personnel entering Parliament to arrest members.
Khalilzad emphasized the growing public discontent with General Asim Munir, the Pakistani army chief, who he claimed is effectively governing the country. He suggested that this dissatisfaction has reignited the mass protests seen in the previous year, leading to a rise in public demonstrations.
Moreover, he raised concerns about the potential threat from ISIS in Balochistan, stating that the group “reportedly has found areas within unstable Balochistan to use as bases for rest, recovery, and training.” Khalilzad warned that such instability could further complicate Pakistan’s fight against terrorism.
In addition to security issues, Khalilzad highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing economic troubles, specifically its dependence on IMF rescue packages. He cautioned that “the country’s economy remains problematic” and that economic struggles will likely worsen amid rising instability.
Khalilzad concluded by urging the U.S. government to reconsider its approach to Pakistan, remarking, “The new U.S. administration will have to review where Pakistan is heading and consider what posture to take.”
