The case of Dr. Mahrang Baloch, a leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), is set to be presented to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, according to an announcement made by Kurtuluş Baştimar, a senior legal advisor and director at Prisoners Defenders Asia.
Baştimar confirmed that he has received authorization to file a petition regarding Dr. Baloch’s arrest, which he argues constitutes a violation of international law by the Pakistani government. He emphasized that her ongoing detention without communication, as well as her lack of access to legal representation, contravene Pakistan’s obligations under international legal standards.
“My client, Dr. Baloch, is currently being held incommunicado and is deprived of legal counsel and family contact,” he stated, pointing out that such conditions violate the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) to which Pakistan is a signatory.
Describing the situation as significant, Baştimar expressed his commitment to advocating for Dr. Baloch, who he called a “brave voice of freedom,” to bring attention to her case on an international level.
In response to Dr. Baloch’s arrest, protests have erupted across Balochistan and have extended to other cities in Pakistan as well as several countries overseas.
In Lahore, the Baloch Students Council Punjab organized a demonstration outside the Lahore Press Club on Sunday, where participants denounced the “Quetta massacre,” the excessive use of force in Balochistan, and the unlawful detention of Dr. Baloch along with other BYC leaders. The protesters called for an immediate halt to state violence and the release of all detained individuals.

Demonstrations led by the Baloch National Movement (BNM) have taken place in various European nations, including Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, condemning the arrests of Dr. Mahrang Baloch, fellow BYC leader Bebarg Baloch, and other activists.
BNM also drew attention to the recent deaths of Habib, Imdad, and a 12-year-old named Naimat, who were reportedly killed when police opened fire on peaceful protesters in Quetta.
Speakers at these rallies urged an end to enforced disappearances and the release of political prisoners, alleging that Pakistani security forces routinely target civilians, students, academics, and human rights defenders in Balochistan. Activists overseas appealed to the international community to intervene and support the Baloch people’s quest for freedom, accusing Islamabad of systemic repression that violates basic rights and international norms.
