Two prominent human rights organizations have urged Pakistani authorities to immediately free Baloch students who are reportedly victims of enforced disappearances. They warned that these cases indicate a “systemic campaign” targeting ethnic Baloch youth across Balochistan and other regions of the country.
In a statement from its South Asia office, Amnesty International highlighted the case of Mahjabeen Baloch, a student at the University of Balochistan who has been missing since May 29. Her brother, Younas Baloch, was reportedly forcibly disappeared by security forces five days earlier.
Amnesty noted that the crackdown on students has intensified following protests in Quetta, which led to the arrest of Baloch activists, including Mahrang Baloch.
The International Human Rights Foundation also expressed concern over what it described as a “systemic campaign against ethnic Baloch youth.” It pointed to the same cases and warned that these enforced disappearances reflect the ongoing targeting of Baloch students by the military-led regime.
Both organizations voiced concern over additional disappearances involving Baloch students. Amnesty highlighted the case of Javid Musafir Baloch, a law student at Karachi University, who has been missing since a police and counter-terrorism raid at his home in Karachi on April 23, according to eyewitness reports. Another student, Gohram Ishaq, was abducted outside Civil Hospital Quetta on April 24, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
The International Human Rights Foundation alleged that Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, is responsible for the raids and enforced disappearances.
Amnesty International emphasized that these enforced disappearances violate Pakistan’s international human rights obligations. It called on authorities to conduct “prompt, thorough, and effective investigations,” disclose the students’ whereabouts, and ensure their immediate release.
The Foundation added that perpetrators must be held accountable through fair trials, asserting that such actions breach Pakistan’s commitments under international law.
