Due to escalating security concerns, two prominent universities in Balochistan have decided to suspend on-campus classes.
The University of Balochistan (UoB) and the Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering, and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) made this announcement on Monday.
In an official notification from the Registrar’s Office at UoB, it was stated that all academic activities will transition to online platforms until further notice. This decision followed a high-level meeting involving the university’s deans and departmental heads.
“The decision is made in the best interest of students, faculty, and staff in light of the current security situation,” the notification explained. “Classes will shift immediately to an online format. Faculty members are instructed to utilize MS Teams, LMS, and other institutional resources to maintain academic continuity.”
Parallelly, BUITEMS has also suspended all scheduled classes, examinations, and bus services starting from March 17. However, university employees are still required to report for duty.
The administration at BUITEMS announced that a deans’ committee meeting would be convened to assess the situation and determine the future course of classes and examinations.
Students and staff have been advised to exercise caution. The university has pledged to provide updates as the situation evolves.
In the meantime, authorities have placed Quetta on high alert in response to ongoing security threats. The Zehri Flyover, situated behind Quetta Cantonment, was closed indefinitely as of Sunday.
A significant presence of security forces has been noted throughout the city, with numerous checkpoints set up. Earlier, officials released a threat alert indicating that armed groups are active in Quetta and surrounding areas, potentially targeting government buildings, the provincial assembly, or Quetta Cantonment.
