The eight-day sit-in at Shaheed Fida Chowk in Turbat came to a conclusion after successful negotiations between the protest organizers, particularly the families of Zareef Umar and Naveed Hameed, and the district administration, represented by Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Jan Baloch. The protest had been initiated in response to the killings of Zareef Umar and Naveed Hameed, with the families announcing the end of the demonstration once their demands were reportedly met.
Key facilitation in the negotiations was provided by the Kech Bar Association and the Makran Bar Association, with senior lawyers, including Mehrab Khan Gichki, Majeed Shah, and Jadin Dashti, advocating on behalf of the protesters. During discussions, Assistant Commissioner Baloch assured the families that their demands would be addressed swiftly by the Deputy Commissioner of Kech.
The demands from the families highlighted significant issues, including the cessation of harassment towards Zareef Umar’s family, the recovery of individuals listed as missing persons, and accountability for those responsible for the killings of Zareef Umar and Naveed Hameed. The administration committed to recovering or releasing some missing individuals within 24 hours and indicated that additional measures would follow.
Despite the resolution, a joint press conference featuring Zareef Umar’s sister and the advocates underscored the need for the administration to fulfill its commitments, emphasizing that the sit-in would resume if promises were not honored.
In parallel, a simultaneous sit-in at the CPEC Highway’s Hoshap Zero Point, organized by the families of Zaman Jan and Abul Hassan, also concluded after the district administration provided assurances. Assistant Commissioner Baloch accepted their demands and facilitated a meeting between the detained individuals and their families, which was confirmed by the families.
The demands of these families mirrored significant concerns, including an end to ongoing harassment and the initiation of legal action against those involved in the disappearances of Zaman Jan and Abul Hassan, among other issues.
