Dr. Sabiha Baloch, the Central Leader of the Baloch Yakjahti Committee (BYC), has voiced strong condemnation over the ongoing imprisonment of Advocate Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali. Both have now spent 100 days behind bars for raising their voices against injustice and enforced disappearances, a situation that has sparked widespread concern among human rights advocates.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Dr. Sabiha Baloch questioned the legitimacy of their detention. She asked pointedly, “Is standing with the oppressed a crime? Is speaking for fundamental rights a crime?” Her words underscored her firm stance that their activism is a legitimate exercise of lawful dissent.
The BYC leader highlighted that both Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali are esteemed legal professionals who have consistently defended families of the forcibly disappeared and other vulnerable communities. Their work, she emphasized, reflects a deep commitment to justice, accountability, and human dignity, making their continued detention even more unjustifiable.
Dr. Sabiha Baloch warned that their imprisonment sends a dangerous message to civil society. She stated that such actions threaten to shrink the space for lawful dissent and create an atmosphere of fear among those who seek justice through peaceful and legal means.
In her statement, she referenced several international legal frameworks that Pakistan is allegedly violating through the continued detention of the two individuals. She pointed to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which guarantees freedoms of expression, fair trial rights, and protection from arbitrary detention under Articles 9, 14, and 19.
She also cited the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), particularly Articles 9 and 19, which emphasize the rights to liberty and free expression. Additionally, Dr. Sabiha Baloch referred to the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, which stipulate that lawyers must be able to perform their duties without intimidation or interference.
“These obligations demand immediate compliance,” she asserted, calling on the authorities to uphold international standards and human rights laws. She demanded the immediate suspension of their sentences and their unconditional release, emphasizing the importance of a fair and transparent judicial review.
Finally, Dr. Sabiha Baloch urged international human rights organizations, including the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ Asia), Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch (HRW), to take notice of the case. She emphasized that the continued imprisonment of Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali is a matter of urgent international concern that requires immediate attention and action.
