Pakistani military forces have initiated a significant military operation in Balochistan’s Dera Bugti region, reportedly launched in response to the abduction of a “footballer” by unidentified individuals in the area a day earlier. Government officials have confirmed that the search operation’s primary objective is to rescue the kidnapped individual.
According to reports, Pakistani forces have launched an extensive military campaign in various areas, including Gandoi, Sonari Mit, Sardarpati, Bishk, Dam, and Lagardavan within the Sui and Ach regions of Dera Bugti district. During house raids, the forces have detained ten individuals from different locations, relocating them to undisclosed sites. This operation is reported to involve more than 50 vehicles and eight combat helicopters.
The ten detainees have been identified as Aziz Bugti, Suleiman Bugti, Sharif (son of Ghaus Bugti), Farooq (son of Brahim Bugti), Ali Bakhsh (son of Ali Khan Bugti), Babal Bugti, Lota Bugti, Deen Mohammad (brother of Lota Bugti and son of Jawansal Bugti), Mirzhan Bugti, and Hashim (son of Sori Bugti). Notably, Hashim’s father, Sori Bugti, was forcibly disappeared, killed, and his body discarded in the wilderness in 2008.
The Dera Bugti district administration has confirmed the incident and reported that law enforcement officials have arrested seven suspects connected to the kidnapping of six footballers in the Sui area of Balochistan.
Meanwhile, the Baloch Republican Party (BRP) has alleged that Pakistani forces are continuously targeting and bombarding the civilian population during the operation, claiming that at least five civilians have been killed. However, independent verification of these allegations has been challenging due to a complete blockade and internet service suspension in the area.
Taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Pakistan’s caretaker Interior Minister, Sarfaraz Bugti, has stated that an operation is in progress to rescue the six football players kidnapped from Dera Bugti. He emphasized that the entire area is under a cordon, and efforts are underway to secure the hostages, with instructions issued to security agencies to take all necessary measures for their recovery.
Simultaneously, the armed Baloch “pro-independence” group, Baloch Liberation Tigers (BLT), has reported clashes with Pakistani forces in different areas during the ongoing operation in Dera Bugti. The group claims to have inflicted casualties on dozens of Pakistani troops and damaged a helicopter, which subsequently crashed near the Pakistani camp in the region, according to the group’s assertions. BLT has taken responsibility for the detention of the six “footballers,” alleging that they were operatives of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI, engaged in espionage activities in Balochistan while posing as footballers. The group contends that these detainees have been involved in several military operations in the area and have been linked to the “enforced disappearances” of innocent Baloch youth in Dera Bugti.
